I got a flaxseed grinder yesterday and tried it out by grinding some into my potato chowder.
Who else uses flaxseed and what are some of the things you grind it into? How much of it do you try to eat each day (and how much at a time)? You can measure into the cap of my grinder, but I just ground some into my bowl of soup without measuring it.

How did it taste? I've only put in in lettuce salads - I like the taste. I've only used a tablespoon or so. I have a couple recipes for muffins but I haven't tried them.
I'm not sure I really tasted it....I think it's kind of a nutty taste. They remind me of sesame seeds. Last night my dh and I both ground some on top of our spaghetti. Couldn't really taste it, though. Maybe I'm not using enough!
Hi Kelly, You may have alread done this but, it not, do a search for 'flax recipes' - there are several sites that come up. Also, I get a newsletter via e-mail from Golden Flax and there are recipes in there. I'm the only one in my house that eats muffins, etc. so I haven't tried any of the sweet bread recipes. I never thought of putting it on spagetti but I will as I want to incorporate more into my diet.

Thanks for the suggestion! At this point I've just been trying to figure out what kinds of things would taste okay with a little flax ground up on them like a topping. It's a cute little grinder I got, like a pepper mill.
Are you still using flaxseed? I missed this post when our computer was down last winter, and only just saw it today! I've just started using flaxseed myself, but so far I've just added it to oatmeal or yogurt. I like it though. Dr. Lark recommends eating 4-6 tablespoons per day, or 2 T of the oil. She says to use it in shakes or smoothies, too. I don't know how I got on her mailing list, but she really does have some very helpful advice in her newsletters.

Yes, I'm still using flaxseed. I love my little grinder and have already had to start a second one. I haven't tried it on anything sweet, like smoothies or shakes. I love to grind it up on stuff like fried eggs, rice, veggies, etc.
Don't know if it's really providing any benefits, but I'm sure enjoying it.
I've been very impressed with everything I've read about it: It's the HIGHEST plant source for Omega 3 fatty acids and is also high in fiber and lignans (believed to help prevent some types of cancer).
My favorite recipe:
I grind up about 1/4 cup of flaxseed, then add a few tablespoons of Natural Peanut Butter, a handful of raisins, and about a Tablespoon of honey. I stir everything together, adjusting the amounts, until the consistency is about like cookie dough. Then I form this into little balls and place them in the refrigerator or freezer, to harden them. Makes a healthy snack.
(Optional add-ins: a little oatmeal or oat fiber, raw almonds or walnuts, etc.)
Oooo...that sounds good! I might have to try that at some point.
Julie, did you see my post in this section about Prevention Magazine? Has Oxycise! ever been mentioned in Prevention that you are aware of? If not, it should be!

I get e-mails from a company you can order flax seed from and it also comes with recipes. I should have posed it before but will do that from home. Should have done that before in case anyone was interested.
I found' out in jan that my cholesterol is high. I am 5, 5 and a half a nd weigghh 153. I have done o f sor years and do Curves 2 -3 x la week. I try to eat6small meals a day. i just don't get it. will flaxseed my cholesteral????

I like my flaxseed in my applesauce. It tates like pecan to me. I've not heard about flaxseed helping cholesterol Moe. But i have heard that food combining helps a great deal (see the Zone diet) and also drastically cutting your sugar and bad fat intake will help.

I don't know if you are still using the Flax or not, but I thought I'd throw my thoughts in here anyway. I've been using Flaxseed meal. I'm not sure if there's much difference but I love it. I buy the Bob's Red Mill brand from Smith's. I've been putting it in my milk and I drink it three times day. The only thing is, when I drink it I use a straw and kind of drink and then stir and then drink....you get the point right? I do this because if not then it all sinks to the bottom and clumps up in the straw and kind of gets stuck in my throat. Oh, I use 2 tablespoons per glass of milk, and I'm thinking about adding another. It kind of just tates like cereal. It really suppresses my appetite being mixed with the milk, because we know it's benefits, and, it keeps me regular.... no, I'm not modest. The stuff is great!!

Hi I thought I would get in on this. My favorite is to make a smoothie with apple juice frozen pineapple strawberries, banana and 2 tbsp flax seeds, it is soooo yummy and a good way to get in those servings of fruit each day. I agree I don't really taste much. I was sceptical of this at first, but I am very impressed. I tried the whole liquid omega 3 oil from Garden of life but hated it! so this is better for me, I actually do it. Also Walmart sells organic Flax seeds already ground in the vitamin Isle, a large bag for around $8.
I do think Julie's recipe sounds good will have to try that. Never thought of some of the other things, I do want to put it in my pita bread the next time I make it, I forgot yesterday. Michelle
I enjoyed looking through this thread again. That was December of 2004 when I first posted! (I think...surely it wasn't 2003!) Anyway... I still use a flaxseed grinder. I found a place in town where I could buy the whole seeds and refill my grinder when necessary. I pretty much just grind it over savory things...nothing sweet. I'm sure it would be good on stuff like fruit and yogurt, but it's something in my mindset, lol.
I'm still not sure if I'm really getting any benefits from it, but it's become a habit that I'll stick with.
