Maybe I'm being way too technical, but I'll ask anyway. The one study showed that Oxycise! burned 140% more calories than peddling a stationary bike with no load. That would be a light to moderate pace.

Was the stationary bike peddled for the same duration as the Oxycise! workout (15 minutes) or for some other, more typical workout duration (say, 30 minutes)?

I went to a calorie burning calculator website and discovered that if I peddled a bike for 15 minutes, I would have burned between 91 and 136 calories. That's at a light or moderate pace.

140% of 91 is 218; 140% of 136 is 326. So, does that mean I burn between 218 and 326 calories each time I do a 15 minute workout?

If that's the case, that's simply amazing!

That means that if I do the 15 minute workout or the commuter workout twice a day, which is what I'm trying to do, then I burn as many calories as I would doing the Walk off the Pounds 4-mile express workout.

Let's see, walk hard and sweat or breath hard and not sweat and not be dead tired afterwards, not to mention that I have time afterwards for a life, thank you very much!

If I'm way off in my understanding of the caloric expenditure of Oxycise!, I hope someone will point it out. Because I like these numbers, but I would like accuracy even more.

Hi Julie:
I did see the reply, but call me dense lol I still dont totally get it. I think it boils down to the fact that we burn around 75-90 cal in 15 min. Am I correct w/ that? Thanks!

Hi Tama,
No, you're not dense at all. The subject of calorie burning is apparently more complex than I used to think.

Jill has written:
"We don't have any numbers that show cal/hr/lb. However, we have measured the calories burned per minute -- which ranges at around 5 to 6 calories per minute. The more intensity you use produces the higher calorie burn -- so Oxycise! with lots of gusto."

Jill has told me that a vigorous workout (of ANY type of exercise) will burn about 6 or 7 calories/minute. A more moderate, but still active workout burns around 4 to 5 calories/min. And a mild workout burns around 1 to 3 calories/min. So the more effort you put into Oxycise! the more calories you will burn.

If you do the math, it doesn't seem like this adds up to a lot of calories -- 75 to 90 in 15 minutes. Those numbers may seem disappointingly low. But the good news is that your body will CONTINUE to burn calories at a higher rate for up to 24 hours AFTER you exercise. You can also double the numbers, if you wish, by doing 2 or more workouts per day. But most of the people on our "Success Stories" pages are doing only one workout per day!

By doing Oxycise! on a regular and consistent basis you will KEEP burning calories all day at a higher rate. Oxycise! also helps tone and build your muscles -- and the more muscle you have on your body, the more calories you will burn and the higher your metabolic rate will be -- even sitting still or sleeping!

This may be "way more than you wanted to know", but the following "email conversation" helps to illustrate why the "calorie burn issue" is not as simple as it seems.

Several years ago one of our customers, Angela, posted a message on our website Message Room saying she had heard that BodyFlex, another breathing/exercise program, burns 3500 calories per hour. (Below you will see her question followed by Jill's response.)

I don't know if this question has been answered, but I am curious as to how may calories does oxycise burn per session? Supposedly, BodyFlex burns 3500 per hour!

Subject: Measuring calories burned

"Hi all!
I can guarantee that you don't burn 3500 calories/hour with BF. That would be 58 calories/minute.

"Here's where I believe that number may come from: One pound is supposed to equal 3500 calories. If you lose a pound in weight, then you could conjecture that you have burned 3500 calories. However, that's not what truly happens.

"Using a metabolic cart to measure calorie burn (which basically measures/analyzes your respiration and exhale), an extremely strenuous, sweaty, pounding workout will burn about 6 or 7 calories/minute. A more moderate, but still active workout burns around 4 to 5 calories/min. And a mild workout burns around 1 to 3 calories/min.

"If someone doing BF were studied using actual technology, I'm sure they would show an increased calorie burn. But it will be somewhere in the ranges I just mentioned. I know this because I have had the opportunity to experiment with metabolic carts in research labs.

"Special Note: While teaching Oxycise! to clients in person, I have had them weigh before and after the 15 minute routine. I even did this in a university study done last May. About 90% of the time, they showed a measurable weight loss of about 1/2 lb. I have measured many that have even lost one pound. The highest I have ever measured was one gentleman in his 60's who actually lost 1-3/4 lb. during a 15 minute Oxycise! session.

"So, you could say that Oxycise! burns 7000 calories/hour (1/2 lb. per 15 minutes), or even 14,000 calories/hour, but that isn't how calorie burn is measured.

"I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. James Hill who is an internationally renowned researcher/speaker on metabolism. I described to him the fact that during a 15 minute routine, people lose 1/2 lb. to 1 lb. immediately. He told me that our bodies carry that much glycogen at all times, and that with Oxycise! we are evidently using/burning that up, which is good in the weight loss scenario, because you then will draw on your fat stores to replenish it. Very interesting!"
